Prayers for all Occasions, Needs, and Intentions

A collection of beautiful prayers for the Family.

A Prayer for a Family

O dear Jesus, I humbly implore You to grant Your special graces to our family. May our home be the shrine of peace, purity, love, labor and faith. I beg You, dear Jesus, to protect and bless all of us, absent and present, living and dead.

O Mary, loving Mother of Jesus, and our Mother, pray to Jesus for our family, for all the families of the world, to guard the cradle of the newborn, the schools of the young and their vocations.

Blessed Saint Joseph, holy guardian of Jesus and Mary, assist us by your prayers in all the necessities of life. Ask of Jesus that special grace which He granted to you, to watch over our home at the pillow of the sick and the dying, so that with Mary and with you, heaven may find our family unbroken in the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Amen.

Prayer for One's Family

Father sometimes the family gets me down. The children are noisy and bills pile up. Relatives and friends make demands on my time and attention.

I try to keep first things first and create an atmosphere where Your name is honored, Your word observed. But I get tired and a hard edge creeps into my voice. Help me to cope with the daily strains of living in a family.

Help me to sustain a climate in which my partner can grow in Your love, to encourage my children to develop fully the talents You have given them and to make of my family the community of love that Your Son came to bring. Amen.

Husband and Wife For Each Other

Keep us, O Lord, from pettiness. Let us be thoughtful in word and deed. Help us to put away pretense and face each other in deep trust without fear or self-pity. Let us be done with fault finding and be quick to discover the best in every situation. Guard us from ill temper and hasty judgment; encourage us to take time for all things, to grow calm, serene and gentle. Help us to be swift with kind words. Teach us never to ignore, never to hurt, never to take each other for granted. Justice gives the other his due; write justice on our minds. Charity says, "The beloved is not myself but the other;" engrave charity and compassion in our hearts. Amen.

Prayer for Husbands and Wives

Lord, inspire those men and women who bear the titles "Husband" and "Wife." Help them to look to You to themselves to one another to rediscover the fullness and mystery they once felt in their union. Let them be honest enough to ask: Where have we been together and where are we going?  Let them be brave enough to question: For me, we come first.

Help them, together to reexamine their commitment in the light of Your love, willingly, openly, compassionately.

Help them, together to believe how fragile, yet powerful; how weak, yet how strong; how impossible, yet attainable their love can be.

Give "Husband" and "Wife" the courage to be for each other a person rather than a title. Amen.

A Wife's Prayer for Her Husband

Jesus Lord, my heart is for my husband. It is he whom I love and for whom I pray now. Help me to learn what is for his happiness and our mutual love. Help me to touch his heart and to bring joy to his life. May we truly rejoice in each other, share our plans and wishes, and care for each otherís needs. Help us always to make our lives grow in maturity, grace, and the wisdom of your revelation. Lord Jesus, in Your providence we are together. Help us to appreciate this great gift. Amen.

A Husband's Prayer for His Wife

Lord Jesus, in the heart of my heart you know my desire is for my wife's happiness. You know also I want her to share her love with me and I want to share my love with her. May the good grace of Your Spirit guide my uncertain ways that I may be the instrument of my wife's happiness. Help me to express my love in big and little ways. Help us to rejoice in each other, to be helpful and thoughtful, always to be aware of the mystery of each others personality. I believe we are joined to each other in You. Show us Your favor, Lord Jesus. Amen.

Prayer for a Sick Spouse

O Lord Jesus, I pray for my sick spouse who needs Your grace to be restored to health. You always loved Your friends while You were on earth, and You have promised to love everyone who obeys Your commandments. My spouse and I have tried to be pleasing to You, and You have given us many joys in our married life. But now that my spouse is ill, my heart is heavy. Please give health and joy to our home once again. I ask this with hope in my heart, for You have told us that if we are heavily burdened, we need only come to You and You will bring us peace. Amen.

Prayer for an Expectant Mother

Dear Mary, mother of Jesus, I know now the joy you must have felt when you were bearing within your immaculate body the savior of the world. I feel so unworthy that God would use me to help Him bring new life into the world. You must help me to grow in wisdom so that I may teach my child how to obey cheerfully the will of God in all things. I pray that my child will be born strong and healthy, and will grow as a shining flower of virtue. Help me in my every need as I prepare to bring my baby into the world. Bless this new family and stay with us throughout our lives so that we may all greet you joyfully in heaven. Amen.

Prayer Of Parents For Each Other

Most sacred heart of Jesus, king and center of all hearts, dwell in our hearts and be our king. Grant us by Your grace to love each other earnestly and chastely as You have loved Your immaculate bride, the Church, and delivered yourself up for her.

Bestow on us mutual love, Christian forbearance and mutual patience in bearing each other's shortcomings. Do not allow the least misunderstanding to disturb our harmony of spirit.

Lord, grant that both of us may constantly and earnestly strive to lead a perfect Christian life so that the divine image of Your union with holy Church, imprinted upon us on the happy day of our marriage, may shine forth more and more clearly.

Grant that our good example of Christian living may be a source of inspiration to our children and encourage them to conform their lives to Your holy law.

Finally, after this life may we be found worthy, by the help of Your grace which we earnestly desire, to be taken to heaven and to be joined there with our children forever to praise and thank You. Amen.

Prayer During Pregnancy

O Almighty and Everlasting God who, through the operation of the Holy Spirit, prepared the body and soul of the glorious Mary to be a worthy dwelling place of Your divine Son; and, through the operation of the same Holy Spirit sanctified St. John the Baptist while still in his mother's womb; hear my prayers, through the intercession of St. Gerard, and protect me. Watch over the child which You have given me so that he may be cleansed by the saving water of Baptism and, after a Christian life on earth, may with his mother attain everlasting bliss in heaven. Amen.

Prayer Of Parents For Their Children

O Lord God, You have called us to the holy state of Matrimony and have been pleased to make our union fruitful and happy.

With all our hearts we commend our dear children to You. We entrust them to Your fatherly care and all-powerful protection so that they may grow daily in Your holy love. May they lead perfect Christian lives and be a source of consolation to us and worthily serve You who are their creator. Guard our children, O Lord; help and defend them. Grant us the grace to guide them in the paths of virtue and in the way of Your commandments. We will do this by the good example of our own life, by observance of Your holy law and that of our holy mother, the Church. In order that we may do so faithfully, make us conscious of our grave obligations to Your divine justice. But all our efforts will fail unless You, O almighty and merciful God, will make them fruitful by Your heavenly blessing.

Trusting in the great goodness and mercy You have shown us, we humbly ask Your blessing. We ask it for ourselves and for the children whom You have graciously given us. We dedicate them to You, O Lord. Keep them as the apple of Your eye, and protect them under the shadow of Your wings. Make us worthy to reach heaven together with them, where forever we may praise and thank You, our Father, for the loving care You have given our family. Amen.

A Prayer For All Children

Lord Jesus, you asked your apostles to let the little children come to you and you laid your hands on them and blessed them. We ask you now to take all children into your care and to grant them your grace and blessings.

Time and circumstances have contributed to forming the children of todayís world, and some of that formation has not been good. People, too, have influenced the children and we ask now that only the good influences may prevail.

Help us to help all children. Help us to find the proper things to do to change their lives for the better. Help us to be trustworthy friends and good examples for the children, so they may grow in wisdom and grace.

Grant that those people and events that have led them away from a good Christian life may no longer have any influence. Let all children, especially our own children and those who have touched our lives come to you. Amen.

Prayer For A Handicapped Child

O heavenly Father, creator of all life, You have given us the great honor of being chosen as parents of a handicapped child. Because of this blessing, we have the opportunity to grow in greater patience and deeper love than we might otherwise have done. Teach us how to make our child grow in greater love of You because of the cross our child has to bear. Your own Divine Son had to carry a cross, too. He did so lovingly and in full obedience to Your holy will. Teach our child to make this affliction a royal cross which will carry our child to heaven, where all things are made straight and every tear is brushed away. We ask this, heavenly Father, in the name of Your son, our Lord, Jesus. Amen.

Prayer For A Mentally Retarded Child

Blessed Lord Jesus, by Your own suffering and death, You taught us how to carry our daily crosses with peace in our hearts. For You sanctified the meaning of bearing one's cross. At first, it was not easy to bear the burden of having a mentally-retarded child. yet as the days go by, I realize how deeply You showed Your love by bringing my child into the world with this handicap. Now we have the opportunity right in our own family to develop all of the virtues You cherish so much - compassion, gentleness, patience, and faith in Your everlasting wisdom. Our handicapped child may well be the cause You decided upon to lead us more easily into heaven. I look upon our child, whose soul is created in Your image and likeness, and know of Your deep love. Protect our child always. I know that in heaven our child will radiate Your glory with total joy and peace. Mary, mother of Jesus, be ever with my child. Amen.

Prayer Of Mothers

Mother of Jesus, what a great joy to be a mother, to hold the precious innocence, weakness, and power of my child's life in my arms! Help me to make the gift of motherhood a blessing for my husband and my children. May I realize the immense power of motherhood for good. Bless my husband and me so together we can create an atmosphere of love in our home where our children can grow in age and wisdom and grace before God and men as your own Son, Jesus. Amen.

A Prayer To St. Jude For A Sick Child

St. Jude, glorious apostle, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the patron Saint of hopeless cases and things despaired of, pray for our child who is so sick and miserable. We implore you to make use of the special privilege accorded you to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired.

Please come to our assistance in this time of need, that I may receive the consolations of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, particularly to help our child get better from his illness. Please give him good health and guide his path, that we may bless God with you and all the elect forever. I promise you, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor. I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen.

A Mother's Prayer For Her Children

Holy Mary, mother of God, help me in all my problems. Teach me patience and wisdom. show me how to train my children to be worthy children of God. Let me be kind and loving and keep me from foolish indulgence.

Pray for my children, dear mother. Keep them from danger, especially from spiritual danger. Help them to become useful citizens of their country but never let them forget the kingdom of God.

Jesus of Bethlehem, make my children love each other and their home. Help them to work and pray together in holy peace.

Holy family of Nazareth, be with us all, father, mother and children, every day of our lives. Amen.

A Father's Prayer For His Children

Almighty and eternal God, I humbly turn to You in prayer for our children so that You may bless them and give them Your grace. Enlighten their minds that they may find joy in listening to Your holy doctrine and in following the path of virtue. Protect their innocence and guard them from all temptations to sin. Help them to be obedient to Your holy laws and to serve You faithfully all their lives. May they ever please You and one day be the joy and support of their parents.

I thank You, heavenly Father, for the boundless goodness, wisdom, and power which You have shown to my family. May no happiness or suffering of this earth, no temptation or trial, ever separate us from Your love or cast us into the horrible darkness of sin.

My God and Father, be pleased to grant this grace to my children whom, in Baptism You have made Your own, and whom You have entrusted to me in order that I may rear them in love of You. Help me to maintain and strengthen them in that same love. Grant that they may ever look upon sanctifying grace and their divine adoption as the greatest good they possess. And may they walk so carefully, earnestly and courageously in the ways of Your love, that they may never lose this grace but rather increase it through prayer and frequent holy communion, and at last die in possession of divine grace and of You. Amen.

A Prayer For A Mother After Miscarriage Or COT Death

Compassionate God, soothe our hearts and grant that through the prayers of Mary, who grieved by the cross of Her Son, You may enlighten their faith, give hope to their hearts and peace to their lives.

Lord, grant mercy to all the members of this family and comfort them with the hope that one day we will all live with You, with Your Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, forever and ever. Amen.

Litany for a Christian Home

O Father in heaven, we thank You for our home, our food, our health, and for all who dwell here.

We thank You dear Father.

For giving us to one another in this family, for our happy life together, and comfort in our common sorrows.

We thank You dear Father.

We beg You to lead us in ways of love and tenderness one to another.

We beg You, Holy Spirit.

That we may remain close to one another; that we may be conscious of one another with sympathy and understanding taught by Your example.

We beg You, O Jesus.

That with honesty and cheerfulness, with bravery and truth, we may be quick and ready to help each other in each day's work and cares.

We pray dear Jesus.

That we may, with respect and love, avoid quarrels in our home, which would threaten our unity; and confine our differences within the home.

We pray dear Jesus.

For our life at home now, and the memories to come; for making us one and keeping us secure; for the continuing example of the holy family.

We bless You, O God, our Father.

For the constant support of Your holy Church in all the world; for the assurance of graces You will give us, and for the promise of eternal peace.

We thank You, O God our Father, as we pray for our home.

In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayer to Mary for Blessing the Family

Mary, you trusted your family to Providence throughout your life. From your own human experiences, you share and understand ours. Our Lady of Providence, Queen of the Home, We ask that your Holy Family bless and protect our family in all the days and nights to come.

A Death in the Family

Dear Lord, sometimes it is hard to understand the pain that comes into our lives. This is most true when we lose one we love. At this time, we remember that life is a circle. You have given us eternal life. In dying, our loved one has come back to you as will we all, in our time. The mystery of life is that sadness brings us to our greatest happiness. Bless, with your presence, those we love and miss. Amen.

At Family Conflict

You know, God, we are not a perfect family. The stresses of our lives cause us to bring each other hurt and pain. This is not the way we choose to live with each other. Yet, all too often, it is how we are living. We ask that you guide us in your Providence back to a better and more loving way. Please help us to bury anger and return to the seed of our love. Please help us to value each other as you value us. Amen.

At a Time of Family Crisis

Mary, Queen of the Home, our family is straining. People who ought to be bound in love are pushing one against the other. I think about your family and the problems you faced. I ask for the wisdom to help bring us back together when I can and the strength to hold my tongue when I cannot. I ask that we all remember that we are family and, as you did, live the meaning of those words. Amen.

At a New Birth

Loving God, morning has come again into our lives. The sunshine of a new birth brightens our entire family. We pray for your help, that this child's life will be guided by your ways. We know that we will not do everything right, so we ask that you help us do enough of the right things so this child will flourish, always aware of our love, always aware of your love. Amen.

At an Illness

Lord, being sick isn't easy. I'm scared and I worry about burdening my family. I pray to return to good health and ask for the strength to bear this burden. Help me to remember that your sacrifice on the cross was a lesson for us all, and that all things pass and, in time, bring us closer to you. Amen.

Freedom from Addictions

Lord, one we love is bound by addictions and now is not truly alive, for addictions and choices, addictions end freedom. You died, Lord, so that we could be free to choose our destiny. Please, Lord, help one we love make the choice to break free of addiction and, in freedom, walk back to us and to you. Amen.

Strengthening of Faith for a Family Member

Dear Lord, faith is not always a constant. We live in such a noisy and troubled world that sometimes we forget what is important. You know that has happened within our family. We ask your help in clearing away some of the distractions so that our loved one can find the simple and quiet path back to you. Amen.

Time of Celebration

Lord, we come to you so often in need. I just want to take this quiet moment to say a special word about the good things, about the joy you have brought to our family. If I don't stop to say it often enough, please forgive me and know that I say it now with all my heart. Thank you. Amen.

Prayer for a Family

God of goodness and mercy, to your fatherly protection we commend our family, our household and all that belongs to us. We entrust all to your love and keeping. Fill our home with your blessings as you filled the holy house of Nazareth with your presence.

Above all else, keep far from us the stain of sin. We want you alone to rule over us. Help each one of us to obey your holy laws, to love you sincerely and to imitate your example of your holy guardian, Saint Joseph.

Lord, preserve us and our home from all evils and misfortunes. May we be ever resigned to your divine will even in the crosses and sorrows which you allow to come to us.

Finally, give all of us the grace to live in perfect harmony and love toward our neighbor. Grant that every one of us may deserve by a holy life the comfort of your holy sacraments at the hour of death.

Bless this house, God the Father, who created us, God the Son, who suffered for us upon the cross, and God the Holy Spirit, who sanctified us in Baptism. May the one God in three divine persons preserve our bodies, purify our minds, direct our hearts and bring us all to everlasting life.

Glory be to the Father, glory be to the Son, glory be to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A Plea for Divine Help

Hear us, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, and graciously send your holy angel from heaven to watch over, to cherish, to protect, to abide with, and to defend all who dwell in this house, Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
