Life of Saint Gabriel

Francesco Possenti was born in the Italian town of Assisi on March 1st 1838. He was baptiszd the same day in the same font in which St. Francis of Assisi was baptized. St. Gabriel's life would mirror that of Francis - turning from the excesses of this world to the glory of the next. Francis would be the eleventh of thirteen children born to this mother Agnes and father Sante. Sante was a legal assessor in the town of Spoleto, then part of the Papal States under Pius IX.

Francis was just like every young boy and teenager. He become popular for his warm and outgoing personality, his love of dancing, hunting and the theater. He endangered himself more than once on his hunting expeditions and during a childhood illness had promised to become a religious if he was healed. Twice he was healed, twice he delayed. Francis did well in school, despite a childhood which included the death of three siblings and his own mother. Like a normal boy of his age Francis attracted the attention of the girls of Spoleto, where the family had moved from Assisi.

During a procession of an icon of the Mother of Sorrows, Francis felt Our Lady call to him that he was not meant for this world and he was to become a religious. On the night his father had arranged for him to become engaged, Francis left for the Passionist noviate. The Passionists were founded by St. Paul of the Cross and are a religious community devoted to the living and preaching the of Our Lord's passion and death. The Congregation is active in all continents and has the motto of 'We preach Christ and We Preach Him Crucified', the habit, with its Passionist heart, is distinctive.

Francis took vows in the Passionist community and he took the name of Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows, reflecting the devotion, planted in his childhood home by his mother's image of the Pieta, he always had to Our Lady of Sorrows. Gabriel attained holiness in a very short space of time, he was consumed with love for Christ, through Our Lady of Sorrows. Indeed as well as the vow made by all Passionists to spread devotion to Christ Crucified, Gabriel took an additional vow to spread devotion to Our Sorrowful Mother. Despite being struck with TB he maintained all the severe sacrifices that made up his life, he begged to be carried to Mass and he maintained his cheery disposition despite the painful illness. He died in the presence of the community, hugging close an image of Our Lady of Sorrows, indeed as he died a smile spread across his face and he tilted his head to the right, where he saw Our Lady coming to take him to heaven. He expired before he could be ordained a priest and died on February 27, 1862 in the Passionist monastery at Gran Sasso in the Abruzzi region of Italy. The region of which he is now patron.

Pope Benedict XV canonized Gabriel in 1920 and declared him a patron of Catholic youth. In 1959, Pope John XXIII named him the patron of the Abruzzi region, where he spent the last two years of his earthly life. Through Gabriel's intercession many miracles have been obtained and many have been brought back to the True Fold of the Redeemer.

Prayers to St. Gabriel

O angelic young Gabriel, who, with your ardent love for Jesus Crucified and your compassion for Our Lady of Sorrows, were on earth a mirror of innocence and an example of every virtue; we turn to you full of confidence to implore your aid. Oh! How many evil things and afflictions O how many dangers, assail our young people from every side, seeking to make them lose the faith. You, who lived always a life of faith, who amongst the temptations of the world maintained purity and virginity; turn your eyes to us, cast us a compassionate and pitying glance! Help us to have the grace to persevere in faith; we invoke your name; we cannot doubt the effactiousness of your patronage! In full confidence of our hope in you, we pray, O Sweet Saint, to obtain this particular grace for the greater glory of God and for the good of souls (mention your request). Finally, obtain for us from Jesus Christ Crucified, through Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, resignation and peace so that we might always live the Christian life, throughout all the times of this present life, so that we might one day be happy with you in the presence of our Heavenly Father. Amen.

Prayer to St. Gabriel

Dear Saint Gabriel, your very name recalls your particular devotion to Christ the Man of Sorrows and to Mary the Afflicted Mother. You died young as a Passionist religious but left to us all an example of a life of Christlike sacrifice. Intercede for our seminarians and young religious who are in desperate need of your patronage amid today's sensual and selfish world. Amen.

O God, You taught Saint Gabriel to dwell upon the sorrows of Your most sweet Mother, and You raised him to the glory of holiness and miracles. Grant that we may also share Our Lady's sorrows, and be saved by her protection and intercession. Amen.

God our Father, you alone are holy; without you, nothing is good. Trusting in the prayers of Saint Gabriel of the Sorrowful Mother, our patron, we ask you to help us to become the holy people you call us to be. Never let us be found undeserving of the glory you have prepared for us. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Lord, you gave Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows a special privilege of entering into the passion of Your Son and into the compassion of his Virgin Mother, Mary. Teach us to contemplate with his eyes the very mystery of salvation and to grow in love in the spirit of joy. Amen.

O Good Saint Gabriel, God inspired you to see the Passion of Jesus as it was reflected in the heart of Mary His Mother. By her side you stood beneath the cross of Jesus, gazing on Him as she did and learning the meaning of love. O Saint Gabriel, we wish, like you, to grow in love for God and all God's people. Remember us in our trials, remember especially those who are young. Support us by your prayers all our days. And when this life is done may we join you in heaven in the company of Jesus and Mary. Amen.

O God, who, in wonderful design of your love, called Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows to live the mystery of the Cross together with Mary, the mother of Jesus, guide us to your crucified Son through the Holy Spirit because, by participating in His passion and death we achieve our share in the resurrection. Through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.

O Lord, you taught Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows to contemplate the pains of the your sweet Mother, and by means of her raised him to the highest peaks of sanctity, grant to those, through his intercession and example, to live so united to your Sorrowful Mother so as to enjoy always her maternal protection. You, who are God, with the Father and the Holy spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Chaplet of St. Gabriel (private devotion only)

For use on ordinary Rosary Beads

Make the Sign of the Cross and the Apostles' Creed, then One Our Father, Three Hail Mary's and a Glory Be for the intention of Passionist vocations.

Then on the first Our Father bead:

O Saint Gabriel Francis Possenti! We recall that moment when you lost your earthly mother. After the death of your siblings how harsh a blow to strike you! And yet you turned with confidence to that other mother of us all. In her sorrows you found Our Lord. You, like her, watched the one whom you loved die, listening to those final words. O Saint Gabriel, pray that we might always be resigned and accepting of the 'adorable will of God' and that, like you, we may seek comfort in Our Lord and His Mother.

then on the Hail Mary beads:

St. Gabriel Possenti! Pray for us!

Then on the second Our Father bead:

O Saint Gabriel, Passionist Brother! Calling to mind that day on which, seeing an image of Our Blessed Lady of Sorrows, you fell to your knees and heard the call to become a Passionist, we remind ourselves of the need to listen to and respond to, the call of God. You were always ready to do the will of God without hesitation or delay, help us to know and follow the will of God in our own lives. O Saint Gabriel! We pray that many more young men might listen to god and receive the call to follow in priestly ministry, especially to the Passionists. Help all young people to be attentive to the voice of God.

then on the Hail Mary beads:

St. Gabriel, Passionist Brother! Pray for us!

Then on the third Our Father Bead:

O Saint Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows! You received your religious name which reflected your devotion to Our Sorrowful Mother. Your devotion to her and the Passion of her Son injected you with love for God and all people. It was at your childhood home that you first prayed before the Pieta, then your life was consumed by your love for that Mother and Son. As a Passionist you lived with your Brothers and were a perfect example to them, you continue to be an example today. We pray that we might follow that example and in  doing so be brought closer to Christ Crucified,  through Mary, His Sorrowful Mother, and through you dear Saint Gabriel!

then on the Hail Mary beads:

St. Gabriel of Our Lady of Sorrows! Pray for us!

Then on the fourth Our Father Bead:

Blessed Saint Gabriel! You lived as a Passionist perfectly humble, obedient and chaste. Your community life and your conduct toward others remains a model for our own personal relationships. Your devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows, to Christ Crucified for whom you lived and died and to God in the Blessed Sacrament were expressions of your deep love for the Almighty and His Mother. So great was this love that it entirely consumed you, you could wait no longer and went away to be with God. Look down from those lofty heights, to us, dear Gabriel, who remain here amongst all the temptations of the world. Help us in our daily battles against temptation. Help us to perfect ourselves as you did and to love God with everything that is in us.

then on the Hail Mary beads

Blessed Saint Gabriel! Pray for us!

Then on the fifth Our Father bead:

O Saint Gabriel! Such was your life that our Holy Mother the Church has raised you to the altars as a perfect example for all of us. In particular Mother Church calls you the patron of young people and students. Help our young people to be like you, to respond to Our Lord and not to hesitate. Help them with their daily struggles in following the faith. May we all follow our call to become saints like you dear Gabriel. We ask that you pray to your beloved Christ Crucified for us, for all our needs and that one day be might be reunited with you and Our Lord forever.

then on the Hail Mary beads:

Saint Gabriel! Pray for us!

End with the Salve Regina, then:

O angelic young Gabriel, who, with your ardent love for Jesus Crucified and your compassion for Our Lady of Sorrows, were on earth a mirror of innocence and an example of every virtue; we turn to you full of confidence to implore your aid. Oh! How many evil things and afflictions O how many dangers, assail our young people from every side, seeking to make them lose the faith. Prayers of the Chaplet:

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He arose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace! the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of they womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory be to the Father

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Salve Regina

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To you we cry, the children of Eve; to you we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this land of exile. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us; lead us home at last and show us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus: O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary.
