Numbering of the Psalms
Formerly the Catholic system used the numbering and divisions of the Septuagist (Greek) translation where Psalm 9 was considered two psalms. Protestant and Jewish (and contemporary Catholic systems) depend on the original Hebrew text.

Classification of the Psalms
The Psalms can be divided into five "books," possibly in imitation of the five books of the Pentateuch:
