BLESSING OF THE NATIVITY SCENE

A Family Tradition

The Blessing of the Nativity Scene in church, sometimes referred to as the Manger, usually occurs after the homily. The prayer of blessing takes the place of the concluding prayer of the General Intercessions. The blessing takes place on the Vigil of Christmas but may vary with pastoral circumstances or may be performed at a more suitable time.

The following is the tradition of my family and may differ slightly from the prayer of blessing in church.

Prayer of Blessing

Family or Guest:

God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation you have made manifest your love: when our need for a Savior was great you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love.

Lord, bless all who look upon this nativity scene; may it remind us of the humble birth of Jesus, and raise up our thoughts to him, who is God with us and Savior of all, and who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.
